Most people apply between a quarter and half the amount of sunscreen that SPF ratings are tested at, according to consumer application studies. That gap matters more than the brand you choose, and it changes the price comparison too: the cheapest sunscreen per tube isn’t always the cheapest per proper dose. This guide compares both.
Quick primer: what SPF, PA and “water resistant” mean on a Malaysian label
Quick Answer: SPF measures protection against UVB, the rays that cause sunburn. PA measures protection against UVA, the rays behind tanning and long-term skin ageing, on a four-level scale from PA+ to PA++++. Water or sweat resistant means the formula was designed to stay on through water or sweat, not that it never needs reapplying.
- SPF 50+ means the product tested above SPF 50; labels round down to “50+”.
- PA++++ means a UVA protection factor (PPD) of 16 or more. PA+++ is 8 to 16, PA++ is 4 to 8, PA+ is 2 to 4.
- The PA scale tops out. A sunscreen with a PPD of 20 and one with 40 both show PA++++, so the label can’t tell you which is stronger.

How we chose this list
Quick Answer: We started from SPF50+ PA++++ face sunscreens sold at Watsons, Guardian, pharmacies and official brand stores in Malaysia, then kept seven that each suit a different skin type or situation. Entries are ordered by use case, not ranked by performance, until our humidity wear test is complete.
Our criteria:
- SPF50+ and PA++++ on the pack. Anything lower was left out for daily Malaysian use.
- Sold through an official Malaysian channel, so readers can buy genuine stock and the price is checkable.
- A published RM price and pack size, so we could work out price per ml or gram and the Real-Dose Cost.
- A clear reason to pick it, stated by the brand or retailer: oil control, sensitive-skin formula, water resistance or low cost.
1. Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+ PA++++
Sunscreen specs: SPF50+ PA++++, watery essence texture, 50g, hyaluronic acid and royal jelly extract, face and body use.
This is the value pick. At RM21.00 for 50g at Watsons Malaysia, it works out to RM0.42 per gram and about RM0.58 per proper face-and-neck dose, the lowest on this list. Biore describes a water-like, non-sticky texture that can be layered under makeup, and it’s sold in 15g and 85g sizes too. The 85g tube at RM31.50 brings the cost down to about RM0.37 per gram.
For sensitive skin, the Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Mild (RM24.50 for 50g) swaps in vitamin C derivatives, vitamin B5 and centella. Neither version claims water resistance on its Watsons listing, and Biore’s own directions say to reapply after heavy sweating or towel drying.
Best for: everyday use on normal to oily skin; anyone who wants to apply the full dose without flinching at the price. Where to buy: Watsons Malaysia and most pharmacies.
2. Sunplay Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel SPF50+ PA++++
Sunscreen specs: SPF50+ PA++++, gel texture, 80g, hyaluronic acid and amino acids, free from alcohol, colourants and fragrance (per retailer listing).
Skin Aqua is the pick for normal to dry skin that feels tight in air-conditioning. At RM49.90 for 80g at Watsons, it costs RM0.62 per gram, and the larger tube gives about 58 proper applications, the most of any single product here. DoctorOnCall Malaysia lists it as halal-certified; check for the certification mark on the pack you buy.
The Skin Aqua UV Brightening Moisture Gel (80g, regular price RM45.50 at Watsons) is the brightening variant at a slightly lower cost per gram.
Best for: normal to dry skin, office days in air-conditioning, readers who want a halal-certified option. Where to buy: Watsons Malaysia, pharmacies, DoctorOnCall.
3. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++
Sunscreen specs: SPF50+ PA++++, lightweight cream, 50ml, 30% rice extract, grain-fermented probiotics, niacinamide, chemical (organic) UV filters.
The Korean pick that most Malaysian searches ask about: “beauty of joseon sunscreen” draws about 180 searches a month. Its regular Watsons Malaysia price works out to about RM69.90 for 50ml (we saw it at RM59.42 during a 15% promotion), or RM1.40 per ml. That puts its Real-Dose Cost at about RM1.92, in the middle of this list.
Its UV protection comes from chemical filters, including Tinosorb M (methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol) and Uvinul A Plus (diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate), rather than zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Best for: normal to combination skin that wants a moisturiser-like finish. Where to buy: Watsons Malaysia; the brand’s official marketplace stores.
4. Eucerin Sun Oil Control Gel-Cream Dry Touch SPF50+
Sunscreen specs: SPF50+, gel-cream, 50ml, L-carnitine and oil-absorbing micro-particles, licochalcone A, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic (brand claim).
The pick for oily and acne-prone skin. Eucerin says its Oil Control Technology gives a dry-touch finish and up to 8 hours of anti-shine, and that the formula is suitable alongside acne treatment. Watsons Malaysia sells it as a twin pack (2 x 50ml) at RM222.00 during a 25% promotion, which is RM2.22 per ml and about RM3.04 per proper dose.

5. Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk SPF50+ PA++++
Sunscreen specs: SPF50+ PA++++, milk texture, 60ml, “Triple Defense” technology the brand says strengthens with heat, sweat and water, citrus fragrance, face and body use.
The pick for long outdoor days: weddings, open-air events, beach trips. Its regular Watsons Malaysia price works out to RM135 for 60ml (we saw it between RM94.50 and RM114.75 during promotions), or RM2.25 per ml at full price. Anessa’s claim is that the UV film gets stronger on contact with heat, sweat and water, which suits Malaysian afternoons, but you should still reapply after swimming or towelling. It needs shaking before use.
Best for: outdoor days, sweat, sport; face and body. Where to buy: Watsons Malaysia, department stores, the brand’s official stores.
6. Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Mild Milk SPF50+ PA++++
Sunscreen specs: SPF50+ PA++++, milk texture, 60ml, formulated with fewer UV absorbers, free from paraben, fragrance, alcohol, colourant and mineral oil (brand claim), sweat, water and rub resistant (brand claim).
The sensitive-skin pick for people who need outdoor-level staying power. Anessa built this version for sensitive skin, leaving out fragrance and alcohol while keeping sweat and water resistance claims. Its regular price at Watsons Malaysia works out to about RM141.40 for 60ml, or RM2.36 per ml; we saw it at RM98.98 and RM113.12 during promotions. 7. La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+
Sunscreen specs: SPF50+, fluid texture, 50ml, Mexoryl 400 filter for long-wave UVA up to 400nm, fragrance-free, “ultra-resistant” to water, sweat and sand (brand claim).
The pharmacy pick, and the most expensive per dose here. At RM123.05 for 50ml at Sunway Medical Velocity’s pharmacy, it costs RM2.46 per ml and about RM3.37 per proper application. La Roche-Posay’s case for it is the Mexoryl 400 filter, which extends protection into the longest UVA wavelengths, and testing on sensitive and reactive skin. The formula contains alcohol denat., so very dry skin may prefer a cream.
Best for: sensitive skin, people using retinoids or acne medication, anyone who wants the widest UVA coverage. Where to buy: pharmacies including Sunway Medical Velocity; La Roche-Posay’s official stores.
What does a proper dose of each sunscreen actually cost?
Quick Answer: At the dose SPF is tested at (about 1.37 g for face and neck), one application costs between RM0.58 (Biore) and RM3.37 (La Roche-Posay). Applied twice a day, that’s roughly RM35 to RM200 a month, and most 50g or 50ml tubes run out in about 18 days.

Why the dose changes everything. SPF and PA ratings are measured with sunscreen spread at 2 mg per square centimetre of skin. Studies of real-world use find people apply much less: one study of students across five European locations measured a median of 0.39 mg/cm², and reviews put typical use at 25 to 50% of the tested amount. Applying less drops real protection well below the number on the label. In practice, the cheapest sunscreen you’ll apply generously protects better than an expensive one you ration.
Key takeaway: if the monthly cost of your favourite sunscreen at the full dose feels too high, apply a cheaper one properly rather than a pricier one thinly. As a rough guide, dermatology sources put the tested amount at about half a teaspoon for face and neck together.
Why Malaysian heat makes reapplication non-negotiable
Quick Answer: Sweat, oil and rubbing break down the sunscreen film on your skin during the day. In Malaysia’s heat and humidity that happens faster, so reapply every 2 to 3 hours outdoors and straight after swimming or heavy sweating, whatever the SPF.
A sunscreen works as an even film of UV filters across the skin. Perspiration, sebum, towelling and touching your face all thin or break that film, and a thin patch protects far less than the label says. A water- or sweat-resistant formula holds together longer under those conditions, which is why Anessa and La Roche-Posay make those claims prominently, but none of them lasts all day. An SPF50+ applied once at 8am does not protect you at 3pm after a lunchtime walk.

How to pick the right sunscreen for you
- What’s your skin doing by 3pm? Shiny and oily: a dry-touch gel-cream. Tight and dry: a gel or milk with hyaluronic acid.
- Are you indoors or outdoors? Office days suit a light essence. Outdoor days need a sweat- or water-resistant claim on the pack.
- Does it sting? Alcohol denat. and fragrance are the usual culprits on sensitive skin. Check the ingredient list.
- Will you apply the full dose? Work out the monthly cost at about half a teaspoon for face and neck. If you’ll ration it, pick something cheaper.
- Do you need halal certification? Look for the certification mark on the pack; a retailer listing is a starting point, not proof.

What matters more is applying enough (about 1.37 g for face and neck) and reapplying. An SPF50+ applied thinly can protect less than a lower SPF applied properly.
Do I still need sunscreen if my foundation has SPF? Yes. To reach the SPF on the label you’d need to apply foundation at about 2 mg per cm², far more than anyone wears. Use a dedicated sunscreen as the last skincare step, then makeup on top. SPF in makeup is a useful extra, not a replacement.
What does PA++++ mean? PA++++ is the highest UVA protection grade on the Japanese and Korean scale, meaning a UVA protection factor (PPD) of 16 or more. UVA drives tanning and long-term skin ageing and passes through clouds and window glass. Because the scale stops at four plus signs, two PA++++ products can differ in actual UVA protection.
Do Malaysians need sunscreen on cloudy or rainy days? Yes. More than 90% of UV can pass through light cloud, according to the Irish Skin Foundation, and UVA also passes through window glass. Apply sunscreen every morning regardless of the weather, and reapply if you’ll be outdoors for long.
