How we chose this list
Quick answer: We shortlisted 9 salons in KL, PJ, Melaka and Johor Bahru that publicly describe a diagnostic step (a consultation before chemical work, scalp or elasticity checks, or a named scan tool) and a specialism beyond cutting. We checked each salon’s own site, client reviews and two independent roundups on 25 September 2026. No salon paid for inclusion.
Our criteria, in order of weight:
- Diagnosis before chemical work. A consultation or assessment is part of the service, not an upsell.
- A clear specialism. Frizz control, damage repair, colour or scalp care, stated in the salon’s own words.
- Trained on a professional system. Brand treatment systems (Kérastase, L’Oréal Professionnel, Milbon, Aveda, Shiseido Professional) or an in-house academy.
- Public track record. Named stylists with recognition beyond the salon, independent coverage, or a large review base.
M Concept is listed first because it is the only salon here with a named stylist whom L’Oréal invited to Paris. The KL and PJ entries follow in the order of our earlier Klang Valley shortlist.

Hair stylist, colourist, scalp specialist or dermatologist: who do you actually need?
Quick answer: A stylist cuts and shapes, a colourist handles tone and lightening, a hair treatment specialist works on frizz, scalp buildup and damaged lengths, and a dermatologist diagnoses and treats hair loss and scalp disease. Salons can do the first three. Only a doctor can do the fourth.

Why humidity changes the diagnosis. Hair is made of keratin held together partly by hydrogen bonds, and those bonds break and re-form as hair absorbs water from the air. Damaged hair has a lifted, more porous cuticle, so it takes in more moisture and frizzes faster. A stylist who doesn’t check porosity before a rebond or bleach is guessing at how your hair will behave a week later.
1. M Concept Hair Salon (Melaka and Johor Bahru)
Specialist capabilities: frizz-control treatment, rebonding with a consultation before every service, Air Touch and balayage colour, scalp care, Kérastase and L’Oréal Professionnel treatment systems, GHD and Dyson tools, a private room for Muslimah clients.
M Concept lists seven branches across Melaka and Johor Bahru, including Mount Austin, Southkey and Permas Jaya in JB, and sister studios INM Hair Studio and Mii Hair Salon. Its core menu is built on Kérastase and L’Oréal Professionnel, the two professional brands behind the Paris event covered below.
The specialist to ask for is Dave Wong, one of the few Malaysian hair specialists invited to Paris by L’Oréal (details in the Paris section). His Google reviews read like the diagnose-before-dye rule in practice. One client says she has been seeing him for more than six years and leaves the planning of each visit’s services to him. Another credits him with recommending the salon’s anti-frizz treatment for her hair problem rather than a service she had picked herself.
Frizz is the specialism that sets M Concept apart, and the distinction it draws between treatments is worth understanding. Rebonding breaks the disulphide bonds inside the hair with a chemical solution, flattens the strand, then re-forms the bonds straight, so the result is permanent until the hair grows out. A frizz-control or keratin-type treatment leaves those internal bonds alone and smooths and seals the cuticle instead, so it fades over several weeks but puts far less strain on hair that has already been coloured or rebonded. 2. Number76
Specialist capabilities: Japanese cutting and styling, perms, glass-hair finishing, damage-repair treatments using the Milbon system and ultrasonic ironing.
Number76 started in Tokyo and brought its Japanese salon approach to KL, with several outlets across the Klang Valley. Its treatment menu is built around repairing bleach and heat damage inside the strand rather than coating it for shine, which is why it keeps appearing in local beauty-editor roundups for damaged hair. Best for: bleached or heat-damaged hair that needs rebuilding before the next colour appointment.

3. Hair Atelier
Specialist capabilities: scalp and strand-elasticity assessment, anti-frizz keratin care, gloss colour, Aveda and Shiseido Professional systems.
Hair Atelier at Jaya One in Petaling Jaya assesses scalp condition, how much stretch the hair has left, and lifestyle factors before recommending a service. Elasticity matters because hair that snaps instead of stretching when wet is a sign that chemical work should wait.
Best for: PJ clients who want a stylist willing to talk them out of a service if their hair isn’t ready.

4. Portfolio Hair Studio
Specialist capabilities: dimensional colour, multi-tonal balayage, precision cuts, consultation that often includes scalp analysis.
Portfolio Hair Studio in Plaza Batai, Bukit Damansara, is a colour-led salon that builds its plan from a detailed consultation. It is known for soft brunettes and balayage that grows out gently, which suits KL clients who colour every 10 to 12 weeks rather than monthly.
Best for: natural-looking colour and balayage.

5. 176 Avenue
Specialist capabilities: Kérastase and L’Oréal Professionnel treatments for fine, weak-looking hair and breakage, plus nails, facials and lashes.
176 Avenue runs outlets in Bangsar, KLGCC and The Hub SS2. Its treatment menu uses the same two professional systems as M Concept, so it is the closest Klang Valley match for readers who want a Kérastase salon treatment in a full-service venue.
Best for: Kérastase treatment rituals alongside other beauty services.

6. Walking On Sunshine
Specialist capabilities: Korean head spa (including a Premium Plus Head Spa), C-curl and Korean perms, one-tone colour, rebonding.
Walking On Sunshine is a Korean-concept salon and head spa at Sunway 163 Mall in Mont Kiara. Malaysia’s Top Ten scored it 93 out of 100 in its July 2026 KL salon ranking, the highest in that field, citing its combined hairdressing and head spa services and a Google review base of around 9,300. 7. A Cut Above
Specialist capabilities: cuts, colour and digital perms across many outlets, a trichology-focused product range, an in-house hairdressing academy.
A Cut Above was founded in 1979 by Winnie Loo and is one of the longest-running salon groups in Malaysia. Its academy trains stylists to one house standard, so results are more consistent across branches than at most chains.
Best for: reliable results at an outlet close to you.

8. Hairplay
Specialist capabilities: personalised cuts and colour built from an in-depth consultation on texture, daily routine and skin tone.
Hairplay was founded by celebrity stylist Shaun Yap and Marion Caunter and sits at Solaris Dutamas near Publika. The team plans cuts and colour around how you actually style your hair on a weekday, which keeps maintenance low.
Best for: low-maintenance cuts and colour that suit your routine.

9. Shawn Cutler
Specialist capabilities: balayage, structured bobs, layered cuts, editorial and backstage styling.
Shawn Cutler on Jalan Telawi 2 in Bangsar is led by stylist Shawn Loong and is regularly booked for editorial shoots and red-carpet styling. Choose it for technical cutting and blended colour rather than scalp treatments.

Malaysian hair specialists invited to Paris by L’Oréal
Quick answer: Dave Wong of M Concept Hair Salon in Melaka and Johor Bahru was among the few Malaysian hair specialists L’Oréal invited to Paris. The summit was Kérastase’s first, bringing together more than 400 hair care professionals from over 40 countries.
The Care Coach programme is Kérastase’s global training track for its most active salon partners. According to the brand, it runs for seven months of personal education and covers around 8,000 salon owners and hairdressers in 46 countries. Coaches train on the brand’s diagnostic tools, including K-Scan, an AI-supported camera that photographs the scalp at high resolution so the stylist can see buildup, dryness and density the naked eye misses.
The Paris programme mixed masterclasses and workshops with early access to Kérastase’s 2027 launches. Speakers included studio hairdresser Alexis Parenté, stylist Vanessa Metz, hospitality specialist Rossano Ferretti and brand ambassador Hovig Etoyan. The headline launch was the K-Spa Experience, an in-salon hair spa protocol combining tools, massage technique and treatment formulas. Expect Malaysian partner salons to start offering versions of it in 2027.

How to tell if a salon is a real hair specialist before you book
Quick answer: Send five questions on WhatsApp before booking. A specialist salon will answer at least four of them specifically; a salon that replies “can, just come” to all five is a stylist, not a specialist.
- Do you check my scalp and strands before colour, bleach or rebonding, and is it included in the price?
- Will you do a strand test if my hair was lightened or rebonded in the last 12 months?
- Which professional treatment system do you use, and is the stylist trained on it?
- What would make you refuse or postpone a service on my hair?
- Would you recommend a frizz-control treatment instead of a rebond for my hair, and why?
Red flag: a salon quoting a rebond and a bleach in the same appointment for previously processed hair. Both services break and re-form the hair’s internal bonds, so stacking them in one sitting leaves the strand no recovery time between two structural changes.
When a salon is the wrong place: if you have patchy hair loss, sudden heavy shedding, or a sore, weeping or scaly scalp, see a dermatologist first. Should I see a dermatologist or a salon for hair loss? See a dermatologist first if you notice bald patches, clumps of hair on the pillow, or a receding hairline. They can diagnose causes such as androgenetic alopecia, thyroid-related shedding or alopecia areata and prescribe treatment. Salons can improve how existing hair looks and feels but can’t treat the cause.
What does a K-Scan scalp analysis show? K-Scan is an AI-supported camera used in Kérastase partner salons to capture close-up images of the scalp and hair. It shows oil and product buildup, flaking, redness and hair density more clearly than the naked eye, and the stylist uses the images to choose a treatment. Kérastase’s Pavilion KL store also offers a complimentary hair and scalp consultation.
Is a Korean head spa the same as a scalp treatment? Not quite. A head spa is mainly a deep scalp cleanse plus a long massage, designed for relaxation and a cleaner scalp.
